Dianna Agron wants to show us another side, and we shouldn’t be surprised that she has one. The 24-year-old Glee star—she plays cheerleader Quinn Fabray, in case you’ve been in cryogenic suspension since 2009—grew up taking ballet lessons, but her nickname was Charlie, for her male alter ego and the star of the short stories she’d write in high school. She revered equally the poised Audrey Hepburn and the madcap Lucille Ball. And she’s become famous for playing a virginal, super-popular, conservative cheerleader who gets pregnant, joins the show choir, and starts agitating for all the misfits there. Can we pin her dichotomies on an Upstairs, Downstairs, Eloise-like upbringing? Agron grew up in hotels in Savannah and San Francisco—her father was a Hyatt general manager—and she credits this peripatetic childhood of watching travelers drop their guard for her interest in human psychology and, ultimately, acting. Her intrepid contrariety explains her latest film project as well: I Am Number Four, which comes out this winter and is based on the first in James Frey’s pseudonymous series of young-adult novels. “I’m likening it to Rebel Without a Cause,” Agron explained. “With supernatural elements. And aliens.” Having had the opportunity to perform chase scenes and jump off buildings, she’s ready to add other weapons to her pom-pom arsenal. “I want to be badass,” she cracked. We can’t wait to watch that.

Your new movie, The Romantics, has a lot of big names in the cast—Katie Holmes, Anna Paquin, Josh Duhamel—did any of their famous families stop by the set?
“Tom [Cruise] did. Suri was there every day. We met Fergie many times. We just bonded so quickly; we became such a family—all of us, which doesn’t always happen. We would cook dinners together and go for romps on the beach and play board games. It was just so much fun off the set and on.”

And you worked closely with Anna. Would you ever be interested in guest starring on True Blood?
“Oh my gosh, of course. It’s an amazing show, and she’s amazing. I got the privilege of playing her sister, and she’s just such a strong, wonderful woman.”

We totally agree. So, big question. What would you choose to be: vampire or werewolf?
“I would want to be a vampire.”

And so it begins: After turning down the volume just a tad over the summer, Fox is getting ready to sell the second season of musical megahit Glee (which premieres September 21). Vulture has your first look at the campaign, which, in addition to showcasing Lea Michele’s new bang-tastic do, takes a signature scene from the show’s pilot and turns it into a symbol of Gleek Power.

This year’s promo campaign, which will start appearing on billboards, buses, and everywhere else next week, provides a cold, wet illustration for just how empowered New Directions has become since the show began last season, and the ads featured the universal hand gesture for “loser.” When the show began, the slushee was “a weapon to put the Glee kids down,” says Fox marketing president Joe Earley, while by season’s end, our lovable losers had co-opted this weapon, dousing Mr. Schuester in the finale. Take back the slushee!

By the time Glee actually premieres, you will be seeing slushees when you sleep, or at least when you clench your eyes closed while hitting a high note. Fox plans to use the slushing image — with the tagline “Gleek Out” — in print and on-air and online ad campaigns for the show, with characters expressing their personalities via their respective slushing techniques. All on-air spots for the show will end with a slushee being thrown toward the audience, while Internet ads in mid-September will have users’ entire computer screens dripping with slushiness.

In other Glee publicity news, Brittany (Heather Morris) and Santana (Naya Rivera) have signed on to host Fox’s premiere-week programming, which means they’ll pop up between episodes of various network shows the week of September 20. The actresses will also be a big part of a fall-preview special Fox is sending to affiliates. Insert your own gay shark joke here.
