Google Public DNS prevails as the world’s largest service

15 Feb

GoogleHandling more than 70 billion domain name system (DNS) requests each day, Google is now the largest public DNS service on earth, the Web giant announced today.

“We launched Google Public DNS in December 2009 to help make the web faster for everyone,” software engineer for Google Public DNS Jeremy K. Chen said in a statement. “Today, we’re no longer an experimental service.”

According to Chen, the way DNS works is it acts like the phone book of the Internet. “If you had to look up hundreds or thousands of phone numbers every day,” he said, “you’d want a directory that was fast, secure and correct.”

When Google launched its own DNS service in 2009, its goal was to speed up the Internet by examining the role of servers. After ironing out the kinks and growing exponentially over the past couple of years, the search engine now boasts strong traffic not only in the U.S., but also in South America, Europe, and Asia.

Part of Google’s effort in making its DNS service work more smoothly was to work with Web hosts, known as content distribution networks or CDNs, which have servers all over the world. The company then came up with a way to pass information to CDNs so users would be sent to nearby servers rather than faraway, which speeds Internet service.

“We’ve also added entirely new access points to parts of the world where we previously didn’t have Google Public DNS servers,” Chen said, “including Australia, India, Japan and Nigeria.”

Other free public DNS services include Level 3, Open DNS, DNS Advantage, and Open NIC.

Chromebook: Big Brother to Netbook and Distant 3rd Cousin to Tablet

15 Jun

Samsung Series 5 Chromebook hit stores Tuesday, selling U.S. $ 500 for a 3G version and $ 430 for a WiFi-only model.

Disassembly conducted by iSuppli senior analyst Wayne Lam IHS found that the 5 Series Chromebook has the attributes of hardware commonly found in a notebook with all features.

Chromebook Series 5 is “an interesting device because it is priced like a netbook, but if you look at the building, which is very similar to what Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) trying to do with the MacBook Air,” Lam told TechNewsWorld .

The 5 Series Chromebook may initially have difficulty gaining acceptance among users because they can not see how you can use, Lam suggested.

“It’s a product waiting for the creation of a use case,” said Lam.

This is similar to a criticism often launched by pill, although some models have proven to be better than other vendors.

What the 5 series is made of

Series 5 Measures of about 0. 8 inches tall – roughly the same height as a currency was on the edge. It has a 12.1 inch anti-glare and anti-glare bright 300nit SuperBright. SuperBright Samsung is the name for its bright screen.

A “nit” is a measure of luminance, ie the amount of light that passes through or is emitted from a particular area within a given solid angle. It is used to characterize the brightness of the screens. A typical computer screen is estimated at 50 to 300 nits and lice.

The 5 Series Chromebook weighs 3.3 pounds. It has a battery life of up to 8.5 hours and has an Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) dual-core Atom N570.

It has 2 GB of memory and a disk of 16 GB solid state.

The device comes with a full-size keyboard and a Chrome oversized multi-touch trackpad. It starts in less than 10 seconds, and immediately resume the standby mode. It has two USB ports.

Connectivity is provided through 3G, WLAN, and a reader of four in a single card.

The Samsung comes with Chromebook up to 100 MB per month for broadband service from Verizon for two years.

IHS removal ISuppli

The total cost of hardware Chromebook 5 Series is just over $ 334, iSuppli said.

In terms of features and connectivity, the device most resembles a notebook or netbook 3G value, said iSuppli.

However, the Samsung Chromebook includes advanced hardware features not normally found in low-cost laptops, said iSuppli.

The motherboard is the most expensive single subsystem device, reaching more than $ 86, or 26 percent of the total bill of materials cost.

The 5 Series has a Infineon Technologies Chromebook Trusted Platform Module, more usually seen on computers at company level at an affordable price that computing devices, iSuppli said.

Bright lights, big Touchpad

LCD display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, iSuppli found. This costs $ 58, and is the second most expensive subsystem in the device.

The Chromebook “to some extent, follows the design of the MacBook Air, with its large touchscreen 300nit, large keyboard and a big,” Lam said iSuppli.

The 5 Series Experience Chromebook

While many netbooks comparisons can be made, the Chromebook should not be compared with a tablet, Lam said iSuppli.

“First, it is based on contact, too, that lets you do things more conventional content creation, while the tablet is basically content consumption,” said Lam.

“Think of it as ideal for people who like the idea of a tablet for use in the home, but want an integrated keyboard instead of a touch screen,” said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at Enderle Group, TechNewsWorld.

“This device anticipates a world that still exists,” said Enderle. “Think of it as the equivalent of DOS in the late 1980 – will know more of what will become of what is,” he added.

However, the need for connectivity and access to the site may count against Chromebooks in general.

“Chromebooks are going to fight seriously, regardless of who does,” said Bob O’Donnell, IDC program vice president, TechNewsWorld.

“Price levels are high, people do not necessarily have connectivity, 3G data plans are very expensive, and with 3G, people have a limited amount of bandwidth per month, and is likely to go through it in a couple of days, “O’Donnell made.

Google Voice Search offers a more natural user interface

15 Jun

Google Voice Search for desktop computers, the Internet giant launched today is not much more than carrying a technology company that has been in mobile phones for a while to PC.

But do not write it off as a bit trivial technology too quickly. Voice Search in desktop computing moves one step closer to the natural user interface has been the holy grail of computing for decades.

The function is not very different from the Google service that gives smartphone users with mobile applications. Instead of tapping the microphone icon on the screen of a phone, users click on a microphone icon in the search box at www.google.com that is using the Google Chrome browser. Of course, your computer must have a microphone, or the user needs a headset, so that the service works.

Google is the deployment of the function of this week, so that will be available for some users earlier than others. And for now, only available in U.S. English.

So let’s start by saying voice search to the desktop is not really a feature of the office to use. It’s not only the interference in the work of his peers (though I apologize to my cubicle neighbor before you start spouting out of the consultations). About conversations may inadvertently find their way into search queries. The challenges are also raised in cafes and other public spaces. Clearly, this is a feature that works better at home.

I started with the query type that I suspect many users will try – that is the service trip with some kind of complexity.

“Zbigniew Brzezinski,” I said.

Google Voice Search ear “Brzezinski new big”, which seems a good omen for the service. But then the first link offered was the Wikipedia page for President Jimmy Carter’s National Security Adviser. Not bad.

So I moved to another name in a different part of the world. “Kazuo Hirai,” I said.

Google Voice Search had a hard time with that. “Replace Cas” was the best thing that happened. When it is reduced to “Kaz Hirai,” which provides Google results for the president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment. The results include Hirai Wikipedia page and photos of executives.

Enough of the ruse, however. One of the supposed benefits of Google Voice Search is the ability to talk instead of writing long searches. So I said, “Photos of Barack Obama in the White House.” Presto! A wide selection of images from Google images appeared on my screen the President in his office, talking on the phone, sign documents and meet with visitors.

Another interesting feature is the ability to speak mathematical equations. Just saying “three point seven of nine point two” triggered the result, “3.7 * 9.2 = 34.04.”

I also wanted to see how the service might work with other Google sites. So I said, “YouTube by Dougie.” Although the query to read the last word as “Dougy,” came up with several videos on YouTube, including the outcome of the top tips to teach people how to do the Dougie dance.

At the launch, Google executives said the ability to search recipes as another benefit of the new role. It is easy to imagine that working in the kitchen, wanting to find instructions for cooking a special dish, and make the search on all hands free. (You need a finger to click the microphone icon.) During the demo, a Google executive called a recipe for spaghetti with bolognese sauce. And, as expected, the service delivers the result of perfection.

I tried a different suggestion, one of my favorite dishes. “Squid ink paella recipe,” I said.

The results returned for “cake recipe squid ink,” is not a dish I’m particularly interested in testing. The first result was a recipe of the week from Los Angeles to “Pie strawberry harvest.” Tasty, sure. But again, not what I wanted.

Google executives also discussed the possibility of obtaining translations with voice search. In a demonstration, an executive said: “Translate to Spanish” Where I can buy a hamburger in this neighborhood. “” The first result was a direct translation.

So I tried another: “Translate into Swedish” Where is a good restaurant. “Google will not translate for me. Instead, the voice search results provided links English to Swedish translation services. And even when I tried the same query, calling the result in Spanish, I have links to translation sites but not the actual translation.

So clearly we have not yet reached the point where speech can replace writing to all Web searches, not to mention handling many other tasks. However, Google has led the natural user interface one step further. Still, however, there is a long way to go.

All You Need to Know about The New iTunes

14 Jun

Last week, at the opening of the annual conference of its developers, Apple announced icloud – your new online store and the synchronization of music, photos, files and software. Although not all features are available immediately, part – “iTunes in the Beta Cloud” – that is, if iTunes has been updated to 10.3.1. Here is a summary of what you need to know now about it.

Q: “ITunes in Beta Cloud” – which really comes out of the tongue. What is it?

A: It is a form of matter that you have purchased through the iTunes Store to appear on all computers and iDevices.

Q: But that does not happen when I can sync my device to the computer?

A: It does, but the change is that now you do not have to physically connect anything. When you buy a song on, say, the iPhone can be set to the song will automatically appear in your iTunes library on your Mac at home, your IPAD and your PC with iTunes at work. You do not have to go through the rigmarole of sync Store purchases only music from one device to another.

Q: How is my various devices connected? How do you know that the Apple machines that my music?

A: Remember that your apple? Which is linked to your credit card to purchase easy? That’s the link. Any equipment associated with the ID you can download the purchases you made on another device.

Q: How do I can do this? Where does this new life?

A: On a PC or Mac, go to iTunes and then to “buy” section, located in the left column. Click that and then look in the lower right corner of the new window has two views “download past purchases.” – “Everything” and “not in my library” – and you can switch between them using the buttons in the top right of the window. Anything you have already purchased on another device (the music you have on your work PC, or iPhone, for example) is visible with a small cloud icon next to it. Click on the cloud, and the track will start downloading immediately.

If you’re on an iPhone or other mobile device from Apple, you will find this feature in iTunes. Enter the “bought” from the menu, things are more or less the same on your computer from there.

Q: Do I have to do this manually all the time? What if I just want something to buy on iTunes from now on to go to all my devices?

A: You can set automatic download so that you do not have to think about managing, where the music goes. (Be patient. We’ll get to how to do this automatically in a minute.) Each device has the ability to obtain a copy of something purchased from the iTunes Store in another device. This applies not only to music, of course, applications and books can also be distributed this way too. Buy, for example, a song in iTunes on the iPhone and other devices will appear in about a minute later.

Q: What about movies and TV shows?

A: Not yet. That is still a matter of education, Apple and battalions of corporate lawyers to understand.

Q: How I can set up automatic downloads?

A: Apple’s mobile devices will find the configuration controls. Go to “Store” and see what you need. You can limit the auto-download any music, books, or applications (or any combination), or you can set your iPhone / Touch iPhone / iPod to accept all content, all the time. Automatic download using Wi-Fi signal, you’re in a wireless network, but also can establish control of the screen to use a 3G mobile phone signal if Wi-Fi is not available, and if you do not mind using your wireless data plan.

Macs and PCs, you’ll find these controls in the iTunes preferences, “in” Store. “Once there, the process is similar to what is done on the phone or tablet.

Q: What if I can add music to iTunes I have not purchased from the iTunes Store? They are sent to my other devices?

A: Not yet. At this time, this new feature works only with iTunes Store purchases. Later this fall, Apple will have a new service, the party of iTunes, allowing you to share all your music – whether you bought it from Apple, ripped a CD or got it from another source, like Amazon MP3) – across all their devices for $ 25 a year.

Q: So this means no need to synchronize more?

A: Not really. While you can share some of your media wirelessly at the moment, you still have to connect to a computer to sync your photos, make backups of contacts and calendar data (unless you were in Mobile Me , who did such things, but in stages that for the new services icloud), software updates, etc. Later this year, Apple will be launching icloud features that will address these issues and make synchronization truly a thing of the past. But that’s not until this fall.

Facebook Integration for iOS 5 Missing

13 Jun

Facebook Integration for iOS 5 MissingFacebook Integration for iOS 5 Missing – Announced last night at WWDC was the deep system integration of Twitter into Apple’s iOS 5, allowing users to easily tweet and share their photos, locations or even bookmarks from Safari. iOS 5 will also now sync your contacts with their respective Twitter profiles automatically.

You will however, still need a dedicated Twitter app to read your tweets.

Now, we’re quite surprised with all the Twitter love from Apple, but are confused why there was no mention of Facebook integration. This doesn’t quite compute, especially if Apple’s going for mass market appeal, as Facebook is far more popular than Twitter in user count.

We think that this could be due to the dispute between Apple and Facebook over the non-inclusion of Facebook in Apple’s own music social network, Ping. CEO Steve Jobs has gone on the record to say that Facebook wanted “onerous terms that we could not agree to”.

Now, there’s still time till the end of September for Apple and Facebook to work out their differences so we may yet see an announcement on Facebook integration. But we aren’t holding our breath.

We do however hope that Apple and Facebook can come to an agreement. After all, having Facebook and Twitter integration will let iOS finally catch up to Android, so to speak. It will also make sharing your updates to Facebook much easier.(cnt)

Nintendo console launches Wii U

09 Jun

Nintendo is taking the idea of ”second screen” to a new level.

The company Tuesday showed off a prototype game called Wii system U, which is a smart remote control-like allowing players to play on two screens at once.

The controller has a touch-sensitive 6.2-inch screen – as a kind of Android phone giant – gamers can use to capture images from TV and interact with games that appear on both the remote and on television.

For example, in a video demonstration of the system that Nintendo showed at a press conference at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles, a player puts his finger in a throwing star on the screen of the remote control. With a stroke, the player rolls the weapon in the TV room, and the object appears there immediately – as if it really flew through the air.

The Wii Remote also U is connected to the Internet, allowing users to launch essentially photos or videos from the driver on TV.

Nintendo executives say the U Wii is just a prototype. They offered no details about when the system will be available in stores or how much it will cost. Only A Game is officially in the works for the system: “Lego City Stories”, which Nintendo is being developed in partnership with TT Games, the company said.

Executives of U.S. Wii release compared to the 2006 debut of the Wii, which was the first system that allows players to control games with the movements of their bodies instead of clicking the buttons on the handheld controller.

“It’s a system that everyone can enjoy together, but also one that is tailor made for you,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America president. “It’s unique, unification, even utopian? The answer is “yes” to all this. ”

He added: “It’s unlike anything you’ve played before. It is infinitely complex and yet simple at the same time. You can change the personal gameplay, and can change the way you interact with family and friends. ”

The new system is also an attempt by Nintendo to capture the hardcore players, who have shunned the titles of the family of the company. The remote includes a bunch of hardware buttons – the left and right rear of control – in order to enable these traditional players to play complicated games.

“As an industry, we have not yet achieved is a platform game that is equally satisfying for all players,” said Satoru Iwata, Nintendo’s global president. “However, this is exactly what we intend to create with our new home platform.”

To this end, the company brought out an executive at EA, the largest gaming company, to give approval for the prototype of Nintendo.

The Wii Remote U includes all the technical intricacies of a smartphone – accelerometers, gyroscopes, cameras and a microphone – to make the regulatory act somehow completely new compared with the controls that control other game console systems.

Wii users can convert U driver screen to play games as they would on any other console – like the Microsoft Xbox 360 or Sony Playstation. They can also play some games – a board game such shows – on the U Wii Remote by itself, without the aid of a television screen. Or, exceptionally, players can use both distance and television screens, creating new possibilities.

A game demo showed a sniper shot to the screen in the U Wii remote to capture the target within the window of a building, while the image on television remained static. Another clip shows a player with remote control of the screen to point to a fly ball and make an outfielder catches a baseball game.

Another player is weighed on the Wii Fit Balance Board while maintaining the Nintendo remote control in hand. He put graphics on the evolution of health over right time on the remote screen instead of on TV.
